![]() ![]() Civilization has moved outward, colonizing other planets in the Solar System, but it’s not the kind of life one would expect from an advanced future: the overall impression is that of a dreary reality from which there is no escape, with failing technology few are able to maintain, and none to improve. ![]() Earth has become a wasteland, except for a few cities and some wilderness settlements where people scrape up a miserly hand-to-mouth existence. It’s a pity that such potential riches were squandered in such a way as to make it very difficult to go on, to the point I could not finish the book.Īs I said, the premise sounded solid: humanity has discovered the secret of time travel but – and here is the brilliant twist that caught my attention at the beginning – uses it only to keep the present going, more or less. What adds a good measure of sadness to that disappointment is that this story possessed all the elements to be a good one, the kind of story I love: a fascinating premise, an intriguing journey and a promisingly complex main character. Experience should have taught me by now there is no guarantee that a highly acclaimed book might automatically be right for me – and yet there are times when widespread praise breeds high expectations, so that when a book falls short of those expectations, I’m bitterly disappointed. ![]()

This reminds us of one of Harrison’s central ideas: that there is no real “there” to Viriconium it is just a bundle of words painted on a page at its creator’s discretion. Other times, particularly with the city of Viriconium itself, they are changed considerably. Its very name becomes mutable, one time being Uriconium, another just Vriko. Sometimes, as with that book’s ostensible hero, tegeus-Cromis, things seem to be exactly as they were before. ![]() Each is strange, some bordering on the inpenetrable, but all attempt to shine lights onto new aspects of the larger story.Īs he did with each succeeding novel, Harrison twists, recasts, and reweaves characters, thematic melodies, and locations first found in The Pastel City. ![]() A fourth book, Viriconium Nights (1984), collects seven stories written between 19. John Harrison’s intricate, multi-faceted portrayal of the titular city. The three novels of the Viriconium sequence, The Pastel City, A Storm of Wings, and In Viriconium, are not the entirety of M. ![]() ![]() ![]() This escapade is documented in the book’s central section, a congenial fog of mas, music, grog, ganja, sex, jealousy, freeing-up, and mayhem. These three, reunited by chance in a New York bar, agree on a trip home together for Carnival. Laurence de Boissière is a childhood friend from Laventille in Port of Spain (read: black and poor) who has made it as a poet and academic he has published a hit novel on slavery. Rachel is his second cousin and secret love, a “café-au-lait” beauty, nymphet, and sexual tease. The narrator, William Fletcher, comes from a wealthy white family in Trinidad, and is an unsuccessful writer in New York. But the interesting question is: how does Antoni intend this story to be read? On the face of it, Robert Antoni’s third novel is the straightforward tale of a group of Trinidadian expats who come home for Carnival in Port of Spain, have a wonderfully debauched time, then chill out on a lonely north coast beach where euphoria gives way to horror.
